Is Thai Tea Gluten-Free?
Good news for most: a classic Thai iced tea is generally gluten-free. None of the core ingredients contain gluten. But a few situations are worth a second look - here's what to check.
Why it's usually gluten-free
The building blocks of Thai tea - black tea, sugar, star anise, tamarind, food coloring, and milk - are all naturally free of gluten. A standard cha yen made from tea mix, condensed milk, and evaporated milk has no wheat, barley, or rye in it.
When to double-check
- Flavored or instant powders. Some powdered "milk tea" mixes add maltodextrin or other additives - check the label rather than assume.
- Cross-contamination. A cafe that handles flour (pastries, cookies) could transfer traces. Ask if you're highly sensitive.
- Toppings and add-ins. Boba (tapioca) is gluten-free, but cookie crumbles, wafers, or certain syrups may not be.
- Dessert versions. Thai tea cake and cookies are made with flour and are NOT gluten-free unless the recipe is adapted.
How to keep it gluten-free at home
Brew a Thai tea mix you've checked the label on, sweeten with condensed milk, and pour over ice. That's it - naturally gluten-free.
A simple tea-and-spice blend - check the label for your batch, then brew with confidence.

Gluten-free and dairy-free aren't the same thing. Thai tea contains dairy by default - see our vegan guide for plant-based swaps, or Thai lime tea for a naturally dairy-free version (also gluten-free).
